1. Information We Collect

A. Information You Provide

We collect information you voluntarily provide, including:

• Account information — Email address, name (if provided), login method (email, Apple Sign-In, or Google Sign-In)
• Health profile information — Age, sex, height, weight, activity level, health conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease), and dietary preferences. This information is used solely to personalize your nutrition targets and meal recommendations.
• Nutrition preferences — Preferences such as sugar limits, calories, macronutrients, goal mode, and other filters
• Favorites and saved items — Meals or menu items you choose to save
• Meal logs — Meals you log, including date, time, meal type, portion adjustments, and ingredient customizations
• Photos and images — Menu photos uploaded for AI analysis (optional feature)
• Community contributions — Reviews, photos, accuracy votes, and menu item submissions you choose to share

B. Health Data (Apple HealthKit)

With your explicit permission, NuMeal may access blood glucose readings from Apple HealthKit to provide glucose monitoring features including trends, time-in-range analysis, and meal impact insights.

• HealthKit data is accessed only with your opt-in consent
• We do not store raw HealthKit data on our servers; it is processed locally on your device
• HealthKit data is never sold, shared with advertisers, or used for purposes other than providing glucose monitoring features within the App
• You can revoke HealthKit access at any time through your device's Settings > Privacy > Health

C. Automatically Collected Information

We automatically collect certain information to provide core app functionality:

• Precise location data — Used to find nearby restaurants and calculate distance. Only collected while the app is in use.
• Device and usage data — App interactions, crash logs and diagnostics, performance metrics
• Product analytics & session replays — Anonymized event data (screen views, taps, app lifecycle) and visual session recordings used to understand how users interact with the App. Text input fields (search, messages, profile fields) are automatically masked from recordings.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Provide personalized nutrition targets based on your health profile and conditions
• Calculate personalized nutrition scores for meals weighted to your health needs
• Recommend meals based on your remaining daily nutrition budget and health conditions
• Sort and filter meals by nutrition values and distance
• Display glucose trends and meal impact analysis (if HealthKit access is granted)
• Analyze uploaded menus using AI when nutrition data is missing
• Enable meal logging, diary tracking, and weekly nutrition insights
• Enable favorites, saved meals, and ingredient customizations
• Facilitate community features including reviews, photos, and accuracy voting
• Authenticate users and manage accounts
• Improve app performance, reliability, and user experience
• Provide customer support
• Comply with legal and regulatory obligations

3. AI & Nutrition Data Sources

AI-Estimated Nutrition Data

For restaurants that do not publish official nutrition information, NuMeal may provide AI-estimated nutrition data. These estimates are clearly labeled with confidence scores indicating their reliability.

• AI-estimated data is generated using automated analysis of ingredients and standard recipes
• Ingredient-level nutrition data is sourced from the USDA FoodData Central (FDC) database
• Users can review and adjust AI-estimated ingredients to better match what they actually ate
• Community accuracy voting helps improve data quality over time

AI-Powered Menu Scanning

NuMeal offers an optional AI-powered menu scanning feature.

• Uploaded photos may be securely sent to third-party AI services (such as Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI) for analysis
• Images are used only to extract menu and nutrition-related information
• We do not use uploaded images for advertising or model training beyond the immediate analysis
• Image uploads are optional and initiated only by the user

4. Third-Party Services

NuMeal uses trusted third-party services, including:

• Firebase — Authentication, Firestore database, Cloud Storage, Analytics, Crash reporting (Crashlytics)
• Typesense Cloud — Restaurant and menu item search
• Amplitude — Product analytics and session replay
• RevenueCat — Subscription management (payments still handled by Apple/Google)
• AI Providers — Anthropic (Claude, for meal photo / lab report analysis), Google and OpenAI (potential future use)
• USDA FoodData Central — Ingredient nutrition data for AI-estimated items
• Apple HealthKit — Blood glucose data access (with user permission)

These services process data on our behalf under their respective privacy policies.

5. Payments & Subscriptions

• NuMeal offers paid subscriptions via Apple App Store and Google Play in-app purchases
• Payment information is handled directly by Apple or Google
• NuMeal does not store your credit card or payment details

6. Ads & Tracking

• NuMeal currently does not show ads
• We do not track users across apps or websites
• If ads are introduced in the future, this policy will be updated accordingly

We may use product analytics and session-replay tooling (see Section 1.C and Section 4) to understand app usage. These tools do not use device advertising identifiers (IDFA) or track you across other apps and websites.

7. Data Retention

We retain your data only as long as necessary to:

• Provide app functionality
• Comply with legal requirements
• Improve services

You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time.

8. Your Rights & Choices

You have the right to:

• Access your personal data
• Update or correct your information
• Delete your account and all associated data (including health profile, meal logs, and contributions)
• Withdraw permissions (location, camera, HealthKit) via device settings

9. Children's Privacy

NuMeal is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

10. Security

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your data. However, no system is 100% secure.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
